URBAN COMMISSIONS 2018
The fourth edition of Urban Commissions is now launched and accepting applications.
Water Feature
Dubai is synonymous with water, the shoreline that extends along the length of the city, the Dubai Creek, the mammoth Dubai Water Canal project, the Dubai Fountains, and is rooted in its culture of giving as the refrigerated potable water cabins outside of private residences for passersby who require their thirst be quenched. Moreover, regional architecture hosts water features as central elements in courtyards of homes, acting as a spiritual refuge. These features cool the air around them to enhance both the physical and audio landscapes with the serenity only natural elements command.
This fourth edition of Urban Commissions invites designers living in the UAE to design an urban water feature that can be placed in the outdoor arena of Dubai Design District (d3). The water feature can be a pond, birdbath, fountain, or any design that invites people to gather around water for enjoyment but must be proposed as an urban element that is a majority body of water.
Brief
- Majority of the submitted design is body of water for outdoor placement in Dubai Design District (d3).
- Can be still or dynamic, however the design must be comprehensive and include technical solutions for fountains or movement in the water and be fully integrated in the body of the design.
- Dubai Design District (d3) is a heavily trafficked neighborhood. Due to the number of public events hosted by d3, the water feature must be easily movable.
- Must occupy no more than 4 square meters, as the feature will be relocated regularly - any larger and the weight of the object will result in great difficulty to move.
- Must weigh less than 400kg per square meter due to venue restrictions.
- Must be easily maintained considering the climate of Dubai; the heat, dust and sand should be easily cleaned from the water feature.
- Is not required to be potable (worthy of drinking).
- Must be manufactured and installed entirely within a budget of AED50,000.
