Background on "Gift of Zayed"
United Nations Member States have traditionally presented artworks as gifts to the United Nations. These artworks are featured in the four United Nations buildings and headquarters (in New York, Geneva, Vienna and Nairobi). These gifts embody one of the main objectives of the United Nations, namely the unity of humanity in all its cultural diversity. In 2001, the UAE presented the United Nations with two sculptures.
About the Award
The UAE will present a gift to the United Nations, the "Gift of Zayed", in conjunction with the 2018 "Year of Zayed". The gift will be a unique artwork that will be showcased at the UN building in New York. This competition is a nationwide campaign that aims to select unique and ideal designs for the gift, to symbolise the global unity the United Nations represents and the rich cultural background of the United Arab Emirates in a creative and innovative way. The competition will give two participants (people/ body/group) the opportunity to showcase their artwork to the world by presenting the winning designs at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Terms of participation
Artists who wish to participate must fulfil several criteria and conditions:
1. Each participant must be an Emirati national or a resident of the UAE.
2. Each participant is entitled to submit only one design, which will represent one person, group or entity.
3. The design owner shall waive the ownership of the design and all the rights thereof (including intellectual property rights) to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the UAE. The Ministry will subsequently transfer the ownership of winning artworks to the United Nations.
Criteria of Participation
Complete the registration form.
Refrain from submitting people-centered sculptures.
Refrain from plagiarising renowned and famous artworks. Focus on the uniqueness.
Submit the design document, which explains how the design relates to the core work of the United Nations and details the various materials to be used in the design. This should include sketches of the sculpture featuring four angles (Front view, side view, rear view, 3D perspective).
Comply with specified measurements: the sculpture shall be placed in an acrylic display case that shall not exceed the following dimensions: 96 "h 40" w 36 "d.
Upon selection of the artwork, the sculpture must be transported and delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and sign the ownership certificate and an ownership transfer agreement to the name of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
Steps and stages of the application process
(1) Participants must apply and register online. Requests for registration and documentation must be sent to the e-mail (zayedgift@mofaic.gov.ae). Designs are delivered to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
(2) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation evaluates submitted designs and responds to participants (acceptance or rejection).
(3) If the design is accepted, participants must implement the design and submit it to the Ministry in its final form no later than July 1, 2018.
(4) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation shall retain submitted artworks and organize an exhibition to present them to a select audience for the selection of the two final candidates.
(5) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will shortlist 10 designs and give the owners of these designs the opportunity to present their designs to the jury.
(6) The United Nations will select three winners and display their artwork during a reception hosted by the UAE in New York.
Schedule:
April 15, 2018: Launch of the competition – Beginning of application and registration.
June 1, 2018: Application deadline.
July 1, 2018: Deadline for submission of artworks
July 22, 2018: Announcement of the ten semi-finalists.
September 26, 2018: Announcement of finalists.
September 28, 2018: Delivery of gifts to the United Nations.
Awards:
The owners of the artworks that make it to the finals will have the opportunity to visit the United Nations headquarters in New York and to attend UAE's reception during the 73rd United Nations General Assembly (UNGA73). They will also receive specialized training in the fields of arts and culture in New York.
A maximum of three (3) persons can represent an organisation or an institution that is taking part in the competition.
The first winner will see his/her artwork showcased at the UN headquarters.
The first runner-up will see his/her artwork showcased at the UAE Embassy in New York. The second runner-up will see his/her artwork displayed at headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
